Born in London’s East End in 1930, through his immense passion, perseverance, and continuous study and research, Philip worked his way to become, whom many consider, the world’s leading expert on hair and scalp care. Philip was called the ‘Hair Guru’ by the New York Times, the ‘Hair Wizard’ by Vogue, the ‘Hair Doctor’ by the Sunday Times and he created a unique, award-winning product range that helps bridge the gap between science and hairdressing.

 

Philip was the man who coined the phrase ‘bad hair day’; was the first to introduce the idea of ‘hair textures’ into the hair industry; developed the world’s first ‘pre-shampoo conditioner’; introduced the concept of scalp masks, scalp tonics and hair treatments into the market; and was the first to link hair health with nutrition and bodily wellbeing.

 

Philip gave reassurance to those who simply wanted the best from their hair, treating celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Cate Blanchett and Sienna Miller, as well as providing hair solutions for countless others. His passion for hair and scalp will live on through his Clinics and award winning products. 

 

A Passion For Hair

Philip Kingsley qualified as a Trichologist in 1953, he was Chairman of the Institute of Trichologists, and eventually attained the highest honour as a Fellow Member. In his lifetime, Philip made over 1,000 TV and personal appearances in the UK and USA. Throughout his career Philip provided solutions to the most extreme hair and scalp problems, through to those who just want the best from their hair.

 

Philip’s passion for hair started when working at his uncle’s hairdressing salon when he was just 16. As his parents were unable to afford to send him to university, Philip started saving money to study at the Institute of Trichologists. Even at that early age, he recognised the profound psychological significance that hair had for both men and women and wanted to help. After graduating, he went on to open progressively larger clinics in London as demand for his services grew. This accumulated in the opening of his flagship Clinic on Green St., Mayfair in 1968, and then New York in 1977, after Sir Laurence Olivier sent the whole of the National Theatre to him! Starting with a mere 5 basic products, Philip’s clinic range has grown to over 50 bespoke formulations.

 

Due to his popularity, in 1997 Philip was asked to create a retail range for salon distribution. All based on his expert clinic formulations, it resulted in the first in-salon, Trichologically driven hair and scalp range. Philip Kingsley products not only address the cosmetic appearance of hair, but also its health and integrity. The range has since gone on to win countless awards from magazines including (but not limited to!) Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, InStyle, CoolBrands, Cosmopolitan and GQ.

 

Having grown from being made and sold in a small room on Dorset St., Philip Kingsley is now an internationally renowned and distributed brand. Stockists include prestigious department stores including Harrods, Liberty and Fenwicks, and top stores and salons across the country and world.

 

Scientific & Press Recognition

During his career, Philip was published in numerous scientific papers and dermatological studies, including the British Journal of Dermatology and the American Journal of Endocrinology. He was a guest speaker at hair seminars throughout the world and worked with other (unnamed) companies to improve their formulations. Philip was interviewed on Oprah 3 times, made frequent radio and television appearances, had a weekly column in the Sunday Times for 9 years running and consulted to royalty and celebrities alike.

 

From his success, he has also funded research on female hair loss at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and developed products to suit the needs of those undergoing Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. Philip set up regular donations to the cancer charity Look Good Feel Better, as well as the Royal Marsden Hospital for Cancer Research. Even at the age of 86, Philip was still working tirelessly to revolutionise the hair care market, and to bring reassurance and satisfaction to clients all over the world

 

Elasticizer

The story behind Elasticizer is truly remarkable involving one of the world’s greatest beauty icons, Audrey Hepburn. She initially sought Philip’s advice in his London Clinic in 1974, concerned that her hair was in bad condition due to over processing and constant styling on set. Upon her request, Philip went to work in his Green St. Laboratory and formulated Elasticizer – the world’s first pre-shampoo conditioning treatment.

 

It's carefully selected ingredients restore elasticity, manageability, bounce and shine to damaged hair. Audrey fell in love with the product and used it her whole life. She even ordered pots to be sent to her in Switzerland so she never ran out.

 

Elasticizer has since developed into our hero product, winning numerous awards and gaining recognition as an iconic hair care staple amongst beauty editors, stylists and celebrities alike.
