Vitamin D and Your Hair

Why is Vitamin C Important?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which helps the body regulate calcium and phosphorous levels, in order to maintain healthy bones, teeth and muscles. Vitamin D can be synthesized in the skin following sun exposure, or ingestion through the diet, but must then be converted in the liver and kidneys into its active form. Dietary sources include oily fish, red meat, liver and egg yolks, plus fortified foods.

Depending on where you live, during the winter months you may not be able to obtain adequate Vitamin D through sun exposure alone, and so supplementation may be necessary. Individuals whose skin is more sensitive to the sun, or who have a history of skin cancer, must wear a high factor sunscreen, and so may also need to take Vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D deficiency is more common in people who do not spend much time outdoors, and also in darker skin types.

The connection between Vitamin D and hair loss is currently unclear. However, an association between Vitamin D deficiency and alopecia areata has been identified. Although it is not yet known if this is causative, Vitamin D is believed to have an anti-inflammatory effect, plus also play a role in regulation of the immune system, and alopecia is an inflammatory, autoimmune condition.

Some patients with increased hair shedding (telogen effluvium) have low Vitamin D levels, and whilst further research is required to confirm if the two are linked, experts largely agree that these people may benefit from taking Vitamin D supplements.

Generally, it is best to only take supplements when advised to do so by a healthcare professional. However, the NHS suggests that in the UK, adults and children over 4-years-old should take a Vitamin D supplement of 10 micrograms (400 IU) during the autumn and winter months, when we cannot obtain adequate levels from the sun. Although some sun exposure is important to obtain Vitamin D, always follow appropriate sun safety, and never allow your skin to burn.
