CURL CARE

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

How do I clean my scalp properly without ruining my natural curl definition?

The key to a thorough cleanse is focusing exclusively on the roots alone. Gently massage your cleanser into your scalp using your fingertips for 60 seconds. Avoid rubbing shampoo directly down your mid-lengths or ends, as this friction aggressively strips away defensive lipids, causing frizz. Allow the rinsing water to clean the lengths of your hair naturally.

Yes, because curly and coily textures are naturally washed less frequently, styling creams, heavy oils, and dead skin cells rapidly collect around the hair follicles. This weight creates product build-up that smothers the hair bulb and stretches out your natural pattern.

To combat this without drying your hair out, use our osmolyte-powered Flaky/Itchy Scalp Hydrating Curl Shampoo to deep-clean the root area while safely preserving the lengths.

Avoid rubbing your hair with a towel, as this disrupts your curl pattern. Instead, gently remove excess water with a microfibre towel or a cotton t-shirt.

For maximum volume, dry your hair using a hairdryer with a diffuser attachment on a low-heat, low-speed setting. Tilt your head forward and rest your curls gently into the diffuser bowl without moving it too rapidly, this sets our Curl Activator Defining Cream perfectly for a high-shine, voluminous finish.

In the summer, high environmental humidity forces moisture-starved curls to absorb water vapour from the air, causing the hair shaft to swell and the cuticle to lift, resulting in frizz. In the winter, dry indoor heating strips moisture straight out of the hair matrix, leaving it brittle. To stabilise your texture year-round, use adaptable curl enhancing products that regulate moisture exchange. Layering a hydrophobic barrier like our Elasti-Styler Extreme Curl Cream seals the cuticle down tightly, locking in essential hydration during cold dry spells while completely blocking out frizz-inducing humidity in the summer.

There is no single rule, but most curly textures thrive when washed one to three times a week. As curly hair is naturally prone to dryness, washing it every day can strip away the essential lipids needed to keep the strand supple.

If your scalp feels oily or irritated between your main wash days, using a targeted, sulphate-free cleanser like our Flaky/Itchy Scalp Hydrating Curl Shampoo will refresh your roots and clear away flakes without drying out your natural curl pattern.
