Why is Vitamin C Important?

Vitamin C is essential for a wide range of bodily functions, including wound healing, tissue support, bone health, collagen production and protection from free radical damage. Vitamin C is good for your hair as it is vital for the absorption of iron – a deficiency of which can cause chronic hair loss and hair not growing past a certain length. Your body can neither make nor store this vitamin on its own, therefore it is imperative to consume foods or supplements containing it on a daily basis.

Vitamin C Deficiency

Vitamin C deficiency can cause dry, brittle hair. It can also lead to iron deficiency anaemia (because iron can only be absorbed in the presence of Vitamin C), and this often results in hair shedding. Vitamin C deficiency can be caused by the following factors:

  • A lack of Vitamin C in your daily diet
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Chronic illness
  • Eating disorders

It is preferable to obtain Vitamin C through your diet, rather than supplements. However, when hair loss and/or hair thinning is an issue, a combination of supplements and a healthy diet is best for encouraging regrowth. Be aware that when you ingest iron, you also need to have sufficient Vitamin C levels, or your body will not be able to absorb the iron.

Foods Rich in Vitamin C

Because Vitamin C is water-soluble, it is easily lost from foods through storage, overcooking and boiling. This means it is super important to obtain it from fresh fruits and vegetables — the following are packed with Vitamin C:

  • Oranges
  • Lemons
  • Strawberries
  • Blackcurrants
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Melon
  • Watermelon
  • Kale
  • Broccoli
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Red and green peppers
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Potatoes
